Integrated Prevention Courses

Background:

  • The development of professional and standardized foundational training for DAF prevention professionals is an essential task required by the SECDEF directed Independent Review Commission (IRC) Recommendation 2.2c to determine the optimum full-time prevention workforce and ensure all echelons are resourced and trained NLT 30 September 2023.
  • In addition, the Under Secretary of Defense For Personnel & Readiness (USD P&R) directed military service branches to execute the DoD Prevention Plan of Action 2.0 (2022-2024), which includes Milestone 2.2: Prevention System-Human Resources to ensure the prevention workforce is trained and equipped to execute prevention programs at all levels.
  • This course will also meet the Government Accountability Office (GAO) required corrective action to train DAF prevention professionals serving at DAF MAJCOM and installations in Suicide Prevention Program Manager roles.
  • The new courses include an Integrated Prevention (IP) Chief, Prevention Analyst, Prevention Coordination Specialist, and Prevention Specialist.

Course Overview:

  • Target Audience: DAF RegAF and ARC prevention workforce within 1-year of hire
    • Pre-requisite: DoD SPARX. SPARX (not an acronym) is a web-based system like Military One Source providing a bevy of civilian industry standard training.
    • IP courses are 5-day in-residence or virtual class followed up with self-paced learning modules. Students have up to 60-days to complete the self-paced modules.
      • Governance: DoDI 6400.09 – Section 2.13(c), DoDI 6400.11, Integrated Primary Prevention Policy for Prevention Workforce and Leaders and DAFI, 90-5001 Integrated Resilience, section 3.4
      • Centrally funded

Discussion:

  • DAF prevention workforce currently consists of 500+ personnel
  • In FY23, the workforce expanded to include an additional 350 personnel, adding installation Prevention Chiefs (Supervisor) and Prevention Specialists.

Challenges:

  • Ensuring prevention personnel complete training requirement within required timeframe
