Army Air Corps Sergeant Returns to Gunter

Returning to the military base that he helped build, 96-year-old John Durham toured Gunter and the Air Force Enlisted Heritage Museum, March 16, 2017. In 1940, Army Air Corps Sergeant Durham was stationed at then-Maxwell Field when plans were made to convert the Montgomery Municipal Airport into a preliminary flying school. Durham was one of the military members who turned the civilian airport into an Air Corps flying training base. Sergeant Durham is pictured with a Vultee BT-13 Valiant, a basic trainer aircraft flown at Gunter and a variation of which sits at Gunter’s Dickinson Drive gate. MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Returning to the military base that he helped build, 96-year-old John Durham toured Gunter and the Air Force Enlisted Heritage Museum, March 16, 2017.
