MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. --
The Cypress Tree Golf Course plans to temporarily close three holes due to an upcoming restoration project scheduled to begin March 5.
Holes 9, 10 and 11 will be temporarily closed in order to remove excess amounts of lead and other dangerous chemicals left behind from an old firing range.
Bill Davis, 42nd Civil Engineer Squadron restoration program manager said the estimated duration of the project will be around 3 months.
Drivers, joggers and bikers should use caution if planning to use this section of March Road because of traffic from construction vehicles and the possibility of wet clay on the road, said Davis.
Warning signs are planned to be posted along March Road in order to inform people where the construction zone begins.
In addition to lead, soil samples found traces of Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons, a harmful chemical left behind from the debris of a skeet range previously located where holes 10 and 11 are now, said Davis. It is estimated that the amount of dirt that will need to come out is approximately 12,000 cubic yards.
