The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosts an Exceptional Family Member Program town hall and information fair, Jan. 31, 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the Maxwell Youth Center.

The town hall is for all EFMP families and anyone who interacts with people with special needs, on any level, and is interested in learning how to better relate with them, said the family support coordinator for the Maxwell program.

“Additionally,” said Lela Brown, EFMP family support coordinator, “if you are new to Maxwell or are getting ready to change station …, if your family member has aged out of the program and you have questions about how to remove your name from the EFMP list or if you have questions regarding resources available in the local area or the location being reassigned to, this is the forum to get answers to all your questions.”

Brown also said that EFMP family friends, co-workers, classmates and neighbors can benefit by attending the town hall.

The 42nd Air Base Wing vice commander and Maxwell EFMP champion, Col. Melissa Stone, will open the event. Representatives from the three EFMP components—assignments, medical and family support—will then share their responsibilities and be available to answer questions.

The president and co-founder of the Interaction Advisory Group, Dustin Chandler, will also be on hand to explain how his organization’s Project Companion initiative can help families with special needs and first responders, educators and private sector workers better interact with each other. Project Companion is funded by the Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Representatives from 25-30 on- and off-base providers will also be available to provide information about the services they have available for EFMP families.

“Military life can be stressful at times, and the hardship of moving ever so often, combined with the care of a loved one with special needs, can add to that stress,” said Brown. “This town hall and information fair is being offered to assist in finding resolutions to your issues and concerns."
