MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- The Freedom to Serve...it is possible when we can serve in locations where our children can rise to their best. As a mom of a military child, one of the most important factors in my relocation and retention decision is access to high-quality public schools for my son. Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex is one of those locations where my son can rise to his best, so I can rise to my best, free from concerns about the quality of his education.
As the installation commander and a mom, I know K-12 education is critical to our ability to recruit and retain talented Airmen, Guardians, and families. Our wing and mission partners search for talent to address missions that are highly sought after across institutions in and out of the Department of Defense. Maxwell AFB offers many quality educational options for military-connected children. If you live at the Maxwell AFB FamCamp in your Recreational Vehicle or live in Hunt Military Communities Housing on either Maxwell Air Force Base or Gunter Annex, your children can attend the DoD Education Activity Maxwell Elementary and Middle School from kindergarten through eighth grade. A Blue Ribbon School recognized for academic excellence, its exceptional curriculum, dedicated and compassionate faculty, and state of the art facilities provide the conditions for military children to reach their full learning potential.
For families living on base with high school students, surrounding school districts have out-of-district, flexible enrollment policies that may permit your children to attend schools that are not zoned to your residence.
For those who prefer a Magnet School experience, particularly for their focus on arts, technology, or STEM, we partnered with the Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent to better align the assignment notification process and the Magnet School application window. Additionally, you can now use your assignment notification rather than wait for your orders to submit a Magnet School application. Anybody can apply, no matter where they live. However, if selected, you must reside in the district by the first day of school.
The area surrounding Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex is known as the River Region and includes Montgomery County, Pike Road, Autauga County, and Elmore County. Families assigned to Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex are served by all of these school districts. The incredible advancements the River Region has made in expanding quality education locally in partnership with Maxwell AFB resulted in selection for the Military Child Education Coalition's 2020 Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award, This award recognizes successful partnerships between military installations, school districts, and communities serving military families.
As we celebrate Month of the Military Child, this highlights just a few of the incredible school options for military children at Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex. Whether you are a professional military education student with Air University, providing holistic management of weapon systems as part of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC) Team, ensuring operations and cyber security for both the Space and Air Forces’ global cyber network as part of the 26th Network Operations Squadron (26th NOS), supporting C-130 airlift missions as part of the 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW), or providing installation support as part of the Air Base Wing, there are multiple quality education options for your children...and peace of mind plus more Freedom to Serve for you as a parent, knowing our military children have access to high quality public education.
