MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- The 42nd Air Base Wing is scheduled to conduct an emergency response exercise Oct. 17, 2024, between 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex.
The exercise will involve multiple training scenarios to prepare service members to respond to emergency situations. Members will be on scene during exercise scenarios to ensure public safety.
Increased noise and activity to include sound effects, simulated gunfire, messages from the Giant Voice system, sirens and noises from emergency vehicles, may be heard. Visual effects such as smoke may also be seen.
The following measures have been implemented to reduce any potential disruptions to local communities and regular base operations:
- There may be instances where the exercise leads to an increase in traffic around the base or delays in accessing the base, including temporary inbound and outbound gate closures. However, gates will only be interrupted briefly to demonstrate capabilities before returning to normal procedures.
- The Base Exchange, Shoppette, Commissary, Maxwell Credit Union, and the Gunter pharmacy will not be affected by any segment of the exercise.
- Maxwell and Gunter Child Development Centers, Maxwell and Gunter Youth Centers, school age at Gunter, and DODEA elementary and middle schools are exempt from all segments of the exercise. This includes drop-off and pick-up of children.
- Air University students, faculty, and distinguished visitors on Maxwell AFB & Gunter Annex are exempt from all exercise segments. This exemption applies to travel in vehicles, visiting buildings or facilities, and moving around outdoors.
In the event of a real-world situation the exercise will be terminated, and the base will be notified through official correspondence and the AtHoc notification system.
