AFIT students use talents to serve community Published July 8, 2011 By Daryl Mayer 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio -- A group of Engineering Management students from the Air Force Institute of Technology put their education to use on June 25 helping an elderly Dayton resident in need. First Lt. Zach Schiff designed the wheelchair ramp and collaborated with fellow project leader, Capt. Aaron Zorn, and other AFIT students from the Department of Systems and Engineering Management to build it at the elderly person's home. "In an effort to join project management skills gleaned from work and deployment experiences with a desire to give back to the community, students designed and built what will hopefully be the first of many ramps in the area," said Captain Zorn. This project was a partnership between students in the Engineering Management program, Rebuilding Together, and the Dayton Service Engineering Collaborative. While the agencies provided the funds and supplies, the AFIT team provided the brainpower and brawn. "We hope we've started a tradition that will last for years," Lieutenant Schiff said. "This is a great way to show 'Service before Self.'"
