A look at Retiree Appreciation Days Published Oct. 26, 2012 By Rebecca Burylo Air University Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. - -- Retirees at Maxwell will be given a triple dose of special treatment with bingo, lunch specials, greenhouse tours and helpful tips for retired living during Retiree Appreciation Days Nov. 7-9. In previous years, retirees were honored with a single day of festivities. This year, retirees will experience a new format where various events and promotions will be spread out over three days. It's the best way Maxwell can show gratitude for those giving their lives to the service, according to Capt. Aaron Jackson, Retiree Appreciation Days committee chair. "Retiree Appreciation Days is an extremely important event for Maxwell Air Force Base," he said. "This year's three-day experience demonstrates the level of commitment we have to our retiree population, and it emphasizes the importance of serving those who served our country before us." The events kick-off at the Maxwell Event Center with guest speaker retired Navy Rear Adm. Clyde Marsh, commissioner of Alabama Veterans Affairs, beginning at 1 p.m. Nov. 7. Some areas around base where retirees can be rewarded for their years of service will be at the Maxwell Club and Cypress Golf where they can receive $1 off lunch, the Maxwell Bowling Center offers two games and a lunch for $8 and free bingo at the Maxwell Event Center from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Nov. 7. Plants, dogs and income information will fill up events Nov. 8, beginning with a free plant give-away at the base greenhouse, opening its doors for tours from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. That day will also bring retirees information on how they can best handle a retirement income along with the legal information associated with retirement starting at 10 a.m. inside the Air University Facility's Shelburne Hall. The day will end with a security forces military working dog demonstration at 2:30 p.m. at the grassy area behind the Maxwell Event Center, showcasing learned tricks and specialized training to the retired community. Each presentation will last 30 minutes and will go till 4:30 p.m. November 9 will wrap up the week with tours of the 908th Airlift Wing and a close look at a C-130. The 42nd Medical Group will also host a health and wellness fair in the clinic's lobby, giving tips on how to keep active and eat healthy while retired. Later on, the 42nd Air Base Wing legal office will cover the necessary documents for new retirees. The week will conclude with a shotgun-start scramble golf game with teams of four including a lunch, green fees and cart for $20 at the Cypress Tree Golf Course. Providing such benefits to recognize the retired community is an honor according to Col. Susan Schlacter, vice commander of the 42nd Air Base Wing. "Retiree Appreciation Days is a wonderful opportunity to give back to those who have given so much and made so many sacrifices during their careers," she said. "We hope to reacquaint those retirees, who do not make it to Maxwell Air Force Base on a regular basis, with some of the services and benefits we offer."
