The Maxwell Flyers men's varsity basketball team won its second game of the season, beating the Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., team 74-68 Saturday.

Defense was the call for the team as stingy man-to-man pressure forced Keesler into turnovers, creating fast-break opportunities and easy buckets.

In the first half, the Flyers jumped out to an 18-point lead, but Keesler made a run, dropping the Flyers' lead to 13 going into the break.

The second half of the contest saw much of the same defensive pressure applied, with the intensity still intact and Maxwell dominating inside play by controlling the boards. However, Keesler kept battling, making key free throws that nipped away at the Flyers' lead. Maxwell held them off by making their own shots from the charity line and brought home the win.

Three players from Maxwell reached double figures, led by strong play from forward Alexander Nelson with 20 points. For the second week, reserve forward Brandon Carter was unstoppable, coming off the bench to contributing 19 points. Emmanuel Matthews chipped in 10.

Play continues against the team from Eglin AFB, Fla., at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Maxwell Fitness Center.
