SOS Class, Habitat for Humanity team up to rebuild local home

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala --  Saturday, July 14, marked the last time students from Squadron Officer School class 12D volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity New Hope Village in Montgomery, Ala.

For the last month, more than 190 students from the class have lifted sheets of plywood, swung hammers and roasted in the hot Alabama sun working to rebuild the home at 339 Meehan Street.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers from around Montgomery have worked to restore the Meehan Street home after it was destroyed by a fire in April this year.

"When completed the home is going to a great local family," said Elizabeth Saliba, Montgomery Habitat for Humanity coordinator.

According to Mrs. Saliba, the family is representative of what Habitat for Humanity is all about.

"Being able to provide this new home to a single-mom and her son who had to rebuild after losing everything is why Habitat for Humanity exists, and if it were not for help from volunteers within the community like class 12D we could not get these projects completed," said Saliba.

In addition, class 12D also raised more than $2,000 in donations for local habitat projects within the New Hope Village.

"Habitat for Humanity is an outstanding organization and the class was excited to help build a home for a deserving Montgomery family," said Capt. Michael Ramamurthy, class leader.
