RC boat race at Maxwell pool Published March 30, 2012 By Christopher Kratzer Air University Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Children and their families came to the Maxwell pool ready to motor, during the 42nd Force Support Squadron remote controlled boat race Saturday morning. The outdoor recreation event invited families to traverse the course, made up of buoys, with high powered RC boats in the Maxwell pool, according to Jeff Rice, the coordinator of the event. "We were given the idea to do this on a comment card, and we thought, OK, let's do it," Rice said. "It's something unique for the kids to try, even if it's just for a couple of races." Lt. Col. Brian Neal, a student at Air War College, brought his sons out for the action. Despite losing to his son, Neal said he was thankful for events like these. "It's a great opportunity. We were able to walk across the street so it was very convenient. I'm always trying to do things with my boys and I'm thankful outdoor rec puts together activities that allow families to get together and build memories," Neal said. "I'm sure my son won't soon forget the fact that he just destroyed me in the race. That will probably be a good memory." The event is part of outdoor recreation's initiative to get families outdoors together, according to Rice. "It's good for families to get out and get together, especially after deployments," Rice said. "Part of our mission statement here at outdoor rec is to 'get families out.' We want them to be active and be outside."
