Gunter thrift shop reopens

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, GUNTER ANNEX, Ala. --  The thrift shop at Gunter reopened after months of hard work and dedication from the Maxwell-Gunter Enlisted Spouses Club.

"I'm so excited because something like this doesn't get pulled off quickly, and it takes a lot of work," said Col. Susan Schlacter, vice commander of the 42nd Air Base Wing. She spoke to the crowd at the opening ceremony March 1.

The shop closed for two months, allowing club members to sort through the items, reorganize the stock and automate sales and inventory.

"We have been working to clean, collect new items and give the thrift shop a facelift," said Andrea Cure, head of the publicity committee.

Customers appreciate the new floor plan and layout. "It's ideal and everything looks so organized," said Eunice Thornton.

A new feature is formal wear available on loan, a resource for men and women on a fixed income who need clothes for formal events. "If (customers) dry clean the items before they bring them back, they get their $10 deposit back," said Karen Meade, club adviser.

A café area provides a space for Gunter families and personnel to relax and enjoy a cup of coffee. The facility also has a play area for volunteers' children to facilitate additional spouse involvement.

The thrift shop sells clothes for adults and children, kitchen items, furniture, books, movies and toys to those with installation access.

The store accepts items on consignment during open hours, up to 30 minutes before closing. Donated items are welcome, too.

The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and 4-7 p.m. Thursday.
