In recognition of the contributions of women throughout history and to encourage education and empowerment, the Federal Women's Program has planned activities for Women's History Month in March, including a self-defense course and a C-130 pull.

"We hope to make all employees aware of the opportunities, training and fun things they can do to learn more," said Theresa Osborne, chairwoman of the publicity committee. "These events will enlighten, teach and hopefully empower the ladies of Maxwell-Gunter to 'do better if they know better.'"

President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8, 1980, as National Women's History Week, which expanded to become National Women's History Month in 1987.
This year's theme is "women's education - women's empowerment."

"What's good for women is good for the world," Osborne said. "Without the contributions of women, we would not have adequate health care, enjoy the benefits of voting, attempts at equal pay, adequate education, nor would we be in as many careers."

Women's History Month events at Maxwell-Gunter include:

· Women's self-defense class - Debbie Robison, a certified instructor, will lead a basic self-defense class at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Gunter Community Center. The cost is $6, which includes lunch from Chick-fil-A. Register by Monday by calling 416-3918.

· Walk or run - All members of the Maxwell-Gunter community are invited to a 5-kilometer walk/run at 11 a.m. March 15 at the Maxwell Fitness Center.

· Luncheon and guest speaker -- The Federal Women's Program will host a lunch at 11:30 a.m. March 23 at the Maxwell Club. The guest speaker is Jackie Buck, CEO of the American Red Cross of Central Alabama. The lunch costs $15, and the menu is a turkey croissant or chef salad. Reserve a seat by March 14 by calling 416-3918.

· Pull a plane -- Last year's fire truck pull was no challenge for Maxwell-Gunter women, so this year the stakes are higher with a C-130 pull. All women are invited to participate at 11 a.m. March 28 at Maxwell's north ramp, across from the fitness center. Wear appropriate shoes and clothing, and bring gloves, if possible.
