Spouses’ call to express support, share resources Published Jan. 14, 2011 By Kelly Deichert Air University Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Providing resources and making connections earn Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex the name "best hometown in the Air Force." To continue the tradition, Air University and the 42nd Air Base Wing are hosting a spouses' call from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Maxwell Event Center. "Our recognition of the important role our spouses play didn't end at the conclusion of the Year of the Air Force Family," said Lt. Gen. Allen Peck, commander of Air University. "I wanted to host a venue that invited all spouses, no matter their service or active member's rank, to be able to connect and let them know they can count on our support in this military community at Maxwell-Gunter," said Lynn Peck, who helped organize the event. The event will be more than just an information fair, offering a True Colors personality assessment and scholarships. Door prizes include AAFES gift certificates, entertainment items, movie tickets, and golf and bowling certificates. Lunch and child care also are available. "Troy University of Montgomery is sponsoring a drawing for three $660 tuition scholarships or $150 value for books," Mrs. Peck said. "If you are a current Troy student and a military spouse, please come register for this scholarship." The Defense Financial Management and Comptroller School will offer a free True Colors personality assessment for 75 spouses from noon to 2 p.m. To reserve a spot, contact maxwellgunterspouses@yahoo.com with your name and child care needs. Speakers include Mrs. Peck, 42nd ABW Commander Col. Brian Killough and his wife, Sandi, Chief Master Sergeant Brye McMillon, the command chief master sergeant for Air University, and his wife, Marie. The information fair will include representatives from support agencies such as Tricare, Pinnacle Housing, education office, the 42nd Force Support Squadron, Employment Tools, the Maxwell-Gunter Officers' Spouses' Club, the Maxwell-Gunter Enlisted Spouses' Club, Airman and Family Readiness Center, the chapel, the Health and Wellness Center, Military One Source, medical programs and Family Advocacy. "I want spouses to know that the Air Force along with our sister services care about the well-being of our military families," Mrs. Peck said. "This is a way for me and the team of command spouses at Maxwell-Gunter and Air University to say that we care about our military spouses." Mrs. Peck said she understands the challenges facing military spouses and hopes this spouses' call can provide essential resources. "During my years of experience of being a new spouse, a deployed spouse, a spouse managing the majority of kids and home life while my husband was working long days or TDY, the military spouse support is what helped me through those tough times," she said. "I try every day to give back to what I have received." General Peck expressed appreciation for those bringing this event together. "I want to thank Lynn and all those who've worked so hard to put on a quality event, and hope we get a great turnout for what I'm sure will be an informative and fun spouses' call," General Peck said.
