MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Registration for the Defense Biometric Identification System has begun at Maxwell and Gunter, and everyone needing access to base is required to register by July.

"(With DBIDS) guards will scan the ID of the accessing individual to check for authorized access," said Staff Sgt. Joshua Allen, 42nd Security Forces Squadron assistant noncommissioned officer in charge of pass and registration and site manager for DBIDS. "They will be able to check new digital entry authorization
lists."

Registration should take three to five minutes, he said. "It entails scanning the member's ID card and two sets of fingerprints."

Active-duty military, Department of Defense civilians and retirees are given priority registration through February.

"Maxwell-Gunter has to register 80 percent of the active-duty military and civilian populace by the end of February along with 50 percent of the retiree population, which is why they also have priority," Sgt. Allen said.
Family members can begin registering in March. "Members holding a dependent's (military) ID card will not need their sponsor present," Sergeant Allen said.

"The active military or civilian sponsor needs to register first, though, to prevent any issues."

Those without bar codes on their cards, such as certain contractors and outside agents, also will begin registration in March, but only at the visitor control center,
where they will be issued new ID cards.

An online system will track progress through IDES, increasing accountability across the departments.

The 42nd Security Forces Squadron is working to lessen the impact on Air University students.

"If a student is present for less than six weeks, we are working to have their requirement to register for DBIDS removed and replaced by a local identifier and or TDY orders," Sergeant Allen said. "Students here for more than six weeks will need to register at Maxwell."

Similar measures are in place for those here on TDY.

"Currently DBIDS requires all persons TDY for 30 days or more to register in DBIDS," said Master Sgt. Rodney Hickson, superintendent of plans and programs.

Security measures at the gate will show little change.

"If members are good to go, the screen will appear green, or if there are issues, the screen will appear red," Sergeant Hickson said. "Visitors will also need to be
registered in DBIDS via a paper pass with a photo and bar code on it issued by the DBIDS system."

DBIDS will be implemented across the country at all military installations.
