Breast cancer awareness luncheon to discuss prevention, treatment Published Oct. 15, 2010 MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- The Maxwell-Gunter Federal Women's Program and the Federally Employed Women are holding a breast cancer awareness luncheon at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Officer's Club ballroom. The program is designed to encourage breast cancer awareness, knowledge of prevention efforts and the latest on treatment options. It will also celebrate the victories realized by cancer survivors of all types. All military and civilian personnel and their dependents are invited to attend. Dr. Debra Chiarella of the Montgomery Breast Center, a board-certified doctor in diagnostic radiology specializing in mammography, will be one of three guest speakers. Cynthia Holt, a local three-time breast cancer survivor, will share her experiences and feelings battling the disease. In addition, a local caregiver will provide insights from the perspective of someone supporting a cancer patient. Literature that identifies local resources available to cancer patients and their families will also be available at the luncheon. Mary Moore, a FEW member and the assistant program manager for FWP, said that although it is not the first breast cancer awareness event the organizations have conducted, they felt compelled to further emphasize breast cancer awareness. "One of our members was stricken with breast cancer a few years ago, and she eventually died from the complications brought on by the treatments she received," she said.
