Maxwell Air Force Base entered the world of portable news as it launched a series of podcasts online Monday.

Podcasting, a method of publishing broadcasts via the Internet, allows users to subscribe to a feed of video and audio files, listen to them on their computer and load them on a portable media device.

"We're excited to share the Maxwell story across the Internet, and we hope these productions will help communicate further what our mission is all about," said Lt. Col. Michael Coleman, director of Air University Public Affairs.

Air University Television, a regional broadcast production center based at Maxwell, produces the podcast episodes.

"We have one of the best Air Force production houses in AUTV, and we have been creating award-winning productions for years," said Capt. Ethan Stoker, AUTV's chief. "These podcasts look and sound great."

Maxwell hosts three podcasts, which are available for free on the base's website.

"We produce two video podcasts and one audio podcast," Captain Stoker said. "Our flagship podcast is called 'Around Maxwell AFB' and features short video news stories about Air University, the 42nd Air Base Wing and the base in general."

According to Colonel Coleman, Maxwell plans to continue pushing the envelope in order to communicate the Maxwell story through social networks and new technologies.

"We launched a Twitter account last year and podcasts today, but we're not going to stop there," he said. "Digital communication is the future, and we're committed to reaching people on the devices they use daily. We'll be engaging the public more and more through electronic means in the future."
