As many of you know, crime is on the rise across the U.S. It is also becoming more prevalent on military installations as well. Maxwell and Gunter have experienced a high number of thefts, many in the housing area.

The vast majority of the thefts involved personal property left unsecured.

In response to the thefts, Security Forces have increased patrol visibility. The patrols will identify unsecured items with "If I Was a Crook" yellow tags. The yellow tags will be placed at the resident or building where unsecured items are found.

Further steps will be taken if items remain unsecured or for repeated offenses. It is impossible for Security Forces alone to eradicate "crimes of opportunity," so that means that the residents must do their part.

Residents should make it less appealing for criminals to want to commit crimes in your area. Consider marking items of value with an electric engraver. It improves the ability to identify and return property to the rightful owner.

When unmarked stolen property is recovered, the chance of having it traced back to the owner is extremely difficult, almost impossible.

You should also make a record of your valuable items including descriptions, serial numbers and location of identification markings. You can design your own format for listing your items, but be sure to include a complete description of property such as brand name, model numbers, serial numbers, color, size, etc.

If a resident comes in contact with a burglar, please do not attempt to confront the individual. This can only elevate the severity and danger associated with the event. Safely gather as much detail about the individuals as possible.

Immediately call Security Forces at 911, 953-7222 or 953-7777 with physical description to include gender, hair color, race, approximate age, height, and weight. Also try to get a description of the vehicle (make, model, color, and tag number) and direction of travel.

An ounce of prevention will aid tremendously in the event you are a victim of theft.

I encourage you to take steps to safeguard your property by marking it, securing it and being aware of out-of-place personnel in the neighborhood.
