The 42nd Air Base Wing held its annual Wingman and Safety Day Sept. 25 to emphasize both on and off-base safety programs and camaraderie among wing members.

Col. Kris D. Beasley, 42nd ABW commander, said, "To fully understand the importance of today, we must understand the concept of the wingman. A wingman is one who is trusted to go into battle and means you are mission-ready. It's a position of honor that incurs tremendous responsibility and sacrifice. The critical role of safety is a large part of that responsibility. It also comes with incredible rewards in knowing you have done your part to protect your wingman."

The day started early with a 5K run at 6 a.m. During the morning wing members were able to review booths and displays set up by various safety organizations from both on and off base.

Sports events included tug-of-war, volleyball, table tennis, pool, balloon toss and "dizzy bat." "FSS Bucks" were awarded to the units who finished in the top three. A barbecue lunch finished the day.

In addition to promoting safety, the events of the day were geared toward strengthening the wing's esprit de corps, morale and cohesiveness, Colonel Beasley said.
