Construction projects will affect base gates

Upcoming phased construction projects beginning Sunday will impact the Maxwell and Gunter traffic flow patterns through December, according to Col. Tyrone Woodyard, 42nd Air Base Wing vice commander.

Colonel Woodyard said construction will begin Sunday at the Dalradia Street gate at Gunter. In early June, the Alabama Department of Transportation and the City of Montgomery will begin widening Bell Street between Washington Ferry Road and the CSX Bridge. In July, upgrade construction will start on Maxwell's Day Street gate.

Colonel Woodyard said the construction dates are subject to change based on weather, project delays and other events. He added these projects are all part of ongoing efforts to improve security, roads and infrastructure here at Maxwell-Gunter and the surrounding areas outside the installation.

"Please inform your staffs, family members, contractors, students, TDY personnel and visitors to plan accordingly, anticipate delays, be patient, drive safe and be aware of changing traffic patterns," he said.

At Gunter, the Dalraida gate will undergo a three-phase renovation project from approximately Sunday through July 28. The gate will remain open during normal operating hours. During phase 1, the traffic will be re-routed and during phases 2 and 3, the number of lanes will be reduced.

The Maxwell Day Street gate will go through a six phase, six month renovation project. The gate will remain open for the first three phases from July 1 through Oct. 1. The gate will be closed Oct. 1 through Dec. 31 for the last three phases.

Starting in early June while Bell Street is being widened, crews will work on the north side of Bell Street during phase 1 and traffic should not be affected. Nine to 12 months later, phase 2 will begin on the south side of Bell, again with one lane closed to traffic. Phase 2 is also scheduled to last nine to 12 months.
