Maxwell-Gunter plans Earth Day events Published April 17, 2009 MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Maxwell and Gunter are planning several events to celebrate Earth Day on April 24, according to Beth Osgood. The events are part of the national observance of Earth Day that began in 1970 to celebrate gains and create new visions to accelerate environmental progress, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. On April 24, environmental public awareness booths will be set up at both Maxwell and Gunter commissaries from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The booths will offer information on recycling, conservation, and pollution prevention. A dedication ceremony is planned at 9:15 a.m. for the "Survivor Tree" seedling, an American Elm that was sprouted from the original Survivor Tree in Oklahoma City. The ceremony will be held near Maxwell's Bldg. 500, at the corner of East Maxwell Boulevard and Magnolia Boulevard. Base personnel are invited to a 45-minute field visit to one of the base wetlands to learn about the value and protection of these special ecological areas, Ms. Osgood said. The field visit is scheduled for 1 p.m. Participants will need to register in advance with MSD/CEV at 953-5260 or 953-6417. Ms. Osgood said all base personnel are encouraged to bring a lunch and enjoy a picnic outdoors anytime during Earth Week, April 20-24, in the picnic area near Maxwell's base lakes or take in a view of the Alabama river along Maxwell's River Road.
