Airman 1st Class Mason Conway, 42nd Security Forces Squadron patrolman, saved two people who were in a car accident Jan. 4, 2016, in Prattville, Ala.

On this day, he said he decided to take a new route on his way to the gym on Maxwell. While driving, he spotted something off the side of the road that "didn't look normal."

"I saw this car with trees all around it, smashed and the engine block smoking. So, I put my truck in park and called 911," said Conway.

He proceeded to the driver's side and pried open the door that was pinned shut by broken branches. After clearing the branches, He began to help the driver out of the car, while another motorist began helping the passenger out of the vehicle.

While pulling the driver out, Conway noticed a small flame coming out from under the engine hood. As soon as he and the other motorist pulled the occupants to safety, flames engulfed the car.

"I just kicked into high gear.  I just reacted to something that was wrong," said Conway.

The Airman said he left the scene as soon as civilian first responders arrived and is unsure of the medical status of the occupants.

Conway's duty as a security forces patrolman is to serve and protect, and his training helped prepare him to handle the situation just as if he were on duty.

"His training helped him react naturally to the situation. He knew it was the right thing to do," said Maj. Brian Copper, 42 SFS commander. "To say the least, I'm very proud of him. I wasn't shocked that he did this courageous act as a defender and responder. He has a natural instinct to help others."

Conway added that he was just "at the right place at the right time."
