Maxwell acknowledges the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month  by hosting events throughout the month that educate how to prevent assault and inspire to become more involved in the solution to end sexual assault and harassment.

Three events are scheduled in regards to sexual assault prevention & response: the SAAPM kick-off event, Strike-out Bowl-a-thon and Steps to Stop Assaults step show and talent expo.

The SAAMP kick-off event is April 1 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the parking lot behind the medical group clinic on the corner of Selfridge and Kirkpatrick streets.

During the event, attendees will have a chance to hear and discuss strategies to prevent sexual assault and provide ideas to enhance prevention efforts. The event will also include information about sexual assault and prevention and free educational items.

Col. Andrea Tullos, 42nd Air Base Wing commander, is scheduled to give opening remarks.

"We need leaders at every level to help set the tone to stop sexual assault and to bring awareness to the continuum of harm," said LaNesa Howard, Maxwell-Gunter sexual assault response coordinator. "This is the time that we want to give special attention to efforts to stop sexual assaults and to make a difference."

Fans of bowling can support the cause while enjoying a few games during the 9th annual Strike-out Bowl-a-thon.

Teams compete against one another for the most pins knocked down, with every pin hit symbolizing another 'strike' at sexual assault.

"It's a symbolic event that really focuses on striking out every sexual assault, and that one sexual assault is a sexual assault too many and no one should ever have to go through that," said Howard.

Maxwell Lanes will host the event April 28 from 11 a.m. -1:30 p.m. and at Gunter Lanes April 30 from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

To demonstrate that sexual assault awareness and prevention must be done year-round and not for just one month, the Steps to Stop Assaults step show and talent expo is May 15 at Squadron Officer School's Husband Auditorium 3-5:30 p.m.

The step and talent show encourages people to educate and bring awareness through talents such as poetry, songs, drama or step shows.

"We want people to know that we recognize that the majority of people on our installation--military and civilian--wouldn't hurt anyone, but there are a small percentage of people who hurt. We're asking that the large percentage stops that small percentage and eliminate sexual assault," said Howard.
