The 42nd Communication Squadron received an "Excellent" rating during its Command Cyber Readiness Inspection Feb. 23-27 at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

A team led by the U.S. Cyber Communications from Defense Information Systems Agency spent four days inspecting the squadron on its compliance with computer network directives, vulnerability management, information assurance and traditional security.

"I was blown away by the score we received," said Master Sgt. Roger Steel, 42nd Communication Squadron operation flight superintendent. "The Airmen really stepped up to the plate and performed exceptionally well."

The 42nd CS received notification of the inspection in August 2014 and began scanning the 6,600 computers connected to the network and identified 7,200 vulnerabilities that needed to be addressed.

"We really focused on our network security and took a look at what vulnerabilities existed on our computers across the networks and addressed those vulnerabilities," said Maj. Kyle Grygo, 42nd Communications Squadron commander.

"I definitely appreciated the customer base out there," he stated.  "We caused some inconvenience to them, but it was all in the effort of protecting the network."
