The 690th Network Support Squadron, Detachment 2, was inactivated during a  ceremony at the First Sergeants Academy, Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama, Dec. 16, 2014.

The unit supported the Enterprise Service Desk as part of a worldwide call center.  In collaboration with agencies such as the Air Force Network Integration Center and the Air Force Lifecycle Management Center, the detachment built two automated tools that reduced the workload within call center operations.

"The Air Force is going through some fiscal constraints, so decisions had to be made where to make these cuts," said Lt. Col. Mark Reith, 690th NSS commander. "I want to say that Detachment 2 did a phenomenal job answering that call.  You found a solution to provide better service, more rapid service, and it sets a foundation for future success."

The automated tools -- Information Assurance Officer Express and the Virtual ESD -- also allowed the Air Force to better utilize its manning resources.

"It's a bittersweet moment, but it's also a moment to celebrate because we're realizing a lot of savings -- a lot of cost avoidance -- and that sounds like it's all about the money, but it's really about preserving capabilities in other cyber areas," said Reith.

"The innovation of the ESD -- where we're going now -- lives on through you and is possible because of you," said Capt. Timothy Labinski, who had commanded the detachment since August. "I look forward to serving with you in the 26th Network Operations Squadron and to the great things to come as great things came from the 690th."
