The 42nd Force Support Squadron will transition the base community library to a digital learning resource center on Maxwell beginning Nov. 15, 2014.

According to David Curley, 42nd Force Support Squadron deputy, in an electronic news letter sent to the Maxwell-Gunter community, Air Force leadership, based on significant budget reductions, elected not to fund community libraries beginning in fiscal year 2015.

"Although our libraries are no longer funded, it's important to try and plug the gaps where off-base services are not available to meet the needs of the Maxwell and Gunter communities," according to Curley.

The Maxwell library will become the Maxwell Digital Resource Center and the Gunter library will transition to the Senior NCO Academy Professional Development and Multipurpose Area.

Although the majority of books at the Maxwell library will not be there, the facility will remain open with modified hours and provide services people utilize the most, such as computer and commercial Internet access.  Other services still available are online databases, conference and media rooms, children and teen rooms and professional development materials.

After the Gunter library transitions, the professional development materials and computers will be turned over to the academy so temporary duty students at Gunter can continue to access those services.

"We are fortunate to live in a community that has plenty of local library options, some less than three miles from the base," Curley noted.  "Our Maxwell-Gunter permanent party patrons can enjoy continued access to traditional library services, such as book check out, at one of the many off-base libraries, as well as on-base reference material and children's areas."

Residents on Maxwell and Gunter can receive a free library card for the Montgomery City-County Public Library system.
