Atlanta regional competition next stop for Youth of the Year Published May 8, 2014 By Donovan Jackson 42nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- Leadership, compassion and a hunger for competition are just some of the traits that led Gunter youth directors to select 15-year-old Kameron Moore for the 2014 Maxwell-Gunter Youth of the Year. As the local winner of this year's competition, Moore will go on to compete against fellow candidates from different military bases at the South East Regional Military Youth of the Year celebration June 17-19 in Atlanta. "The preparation that I put into the competition, along with my personality and charisma, I believe will help separate me from my competitors," said Moore. "I am naturally competitive, so I think that my competitive spirit will give me an edge in the competition." At the regional competition, Moore will face a panel of five to seven judges, who will determine her progression through a variation of methods aimed at measuring Moore's capabilities. One test is a three-minute speech detailing what the youth center means to her, the impact it's had on her life and a list of her most recent accomplishments. In addition to the rigorous testing, Moore will get the opportunity to explore and enjoy Atlanta with her fellow competitors. "I believe that Kameron will really enjoy the entire experience," said Latoya Box, child and youth assistant at the Gunter youth center. "Kameron is an outstanding person for Youth of the Year. Kameron shows resilience every day at the youth center. She has really matured since I've met her. It's been a true pleasure having her in the program." Moore hopes that her maturity will help to impress the judges. "I'm really looking forward to showcasing my talents," said Moore. "The previous Youth of the Year winner, Tiara Wilson, inspired me to not only enter into the competition but to represent my youth center to the best of my abilities." Moore said she received an even larger part of inspiration and motivation from two youth center counselors that she considers very dear to her. "I can't thank Mr. Alfred (Frazier) and Ms. Latoya enough; they both mean so much to me. Not only are they great counselors, but they both guided me through the process and helped me achieve my goals as far the competition goes," said Moore. Alfred Frazier, program director at the youth center believes that Kameron is the perfect candidate to win this year's regional Youth of the Year competition. "Kameron is an outstanding person who embodies the leadership and character traits that we look for to represent not only our facility, but also our base as a whole," said Alfred. "She has grown to be a leader and a role model within our program."
