Youths treat security forces, firefighters Published Dec. 13, 2013 By Donovan Jackson 42nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. - -- In celebration of the Christmas holiday, the Gunter Youth Center conducted its annual holiday baking activity, Dec. 5. Each year, members of the Gunter Youth Center bake holiday-themed sweets such as chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies and red-and-green rice cereal treats for the 42nd Security Forces Squadron and the base's firefighters. "I really look forward to this time of year," said 14-year-old Kameron Moore. "I always get excited about cooking for the firefighters and security forces because it's my way of showing appreciation for all that they do on the base. Also, it is a very gratifying experience to witness the look of joy on their faces when we surprise them with the treats." Moore has participated in the annual event for the past five years. Along with Moore, members of the youth center traveled to Gunter Annex's Dalraida Road gate, Dickinson Drive gate and fire station to hand deliver the plate of treats. Airmen working at the gates were surprised when the children and teenagers arrived with the food. "Today was a really good day to be at the gate," said Senior Airman Anthony Scharf. "I wasn't expecting to receive a plate full of goodies from the youth center when I came into work today; however, I'm not complaining." Baking holiday-themed treats provides an easy way for youths to spread the holiday spirit by giving it to the people that are first seen upon arrival at the base. "The guys who work the gate stand outside for the majority of the day, checking ID cards, even during the worst weather conditions," said Latoya Box, a recreational aide at the youth center. "So, through this event each year, the youth center aims to let them know that their efforts are greatly appreciated. I know it's not as good as an extra paycheck, but I'm sure that the treats help, plus we love making the food."
