Continuing its mission to promote and support philanthropy through an employee-focused program, the Combined Federal Campaign will kick off at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Maxwell Club.

Military and civilian members who attend the kick-off will have the opportunity to meet some of the charities supported through the CFC as well as a chance to pledge a portion of their paycheck to any number of charities.

Maxwell-Gunter's goal for this year's campaign is $558,079. The overall goal for the Heart of Alabama campaign is $1,150,000.

"CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign," said Senior Master Sgt. Arthur Thornton, lead installation project officer for this year's CFC. "The CFC is a cost-efficient and effective method for providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all."

Thornton said with almost 200 CFC campaigns throughout the country and overseas, millions of dollars are raised each year for those in need.

More than 250 postal, federal and military organizations participate in the Heart of Alabama CFC through 30 Alabama counties.

Contributors to the CFC have various options that enable them to donate to charities throughout the year.

The payroll deduction option is just one of the ways that members can donate to charities. The option enables a donor to give a large amount to charities by donating a little per month for military donors or per pay period for civilian donors. The donor decides how much they wish to give, and makes either a payroll deduction pledge or a one-time cash, check or credit card pledge.

Last year, the goal for Maxwell-Gunter's campaign was $558,405, and it was exceeded with $600,827. The overall goal for the Heart of Alabama's campaign was also $1,150,000, and $1,257,472 was raised.

Master Sgt. Eddie Ross, CFC alternate lead installation project officer, said he really enjoyed being a part of the CFC project team.

"It was a really enjoyable experience, being a part of the CFC team," Ross said. "As a senior noncommissioned officer, I was able to use my management skills to make the 2012 campaign run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. On a personal level, it was gratifying to have made an impact, not only locally, but worldwide."

According to CFC records, since 1997, the Heart of Alabama campaign has raised more than $15 million between 1997 and 2012. Overall, the CFC has raised more than $7 billion.
