OSC gives 25K in scholarships Published April 26, 2016 By Senior Airman William Blankenship 42nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala -- Maxwell's Officer Spouses Club is once again awarding $25,000 in scholarships to military spouses and children. The 50-member spouse's club plans to host a presentation celebration at the Maxwell Club, April 28, officially awarding 12 applicants their scholarships. "There were 33 applicants this year," said Cindy Guemmer, the Officer Spouses Club scholarship adviser. "We only had one military spouse, but we were able to meet our numbers of 12 total scholarships and $25,000 that we did last year. People should know that shopping at the thrift store really does help others." The thrift shop on base uses their funds all year to present applicants these scholarships. Only military spouses and children qualify for these funds and the scholarships range from $500 to $3,500. "We want to support the community and military kids as they are heading out of the house," said Guemmer. "We base our scholarships on GPA, testing scores, a judged essay, extracurricular activities and number of high schools they have attended." There are three different types of scholarships: high school seniors going to college next year, current college students and military spouses working towards their bachelor's degree. "This is why everyone needs to support the thrift shop," said Guemmer. "Every penny spent there goes directly into providing an opportunity for military kids and spouses to further their education."
