Extensive training paid off for a team of Maxwell fire fighters and one lucky gentleman here on base recently.

Maxwell fire fighters responded and administered CPR Sept. 23, to a Maxwell Motor Pool employee after they received a call for help.

The incident began when someone ran the short distance from the base Motor Pool to the base Fire Department yelling for help, afraid his co-worker may be having a heart attack.

Receiving the notification in an unusual way, the Maxwell fire department promptly made their way to the person in need.

Maxwell fire fighter, Jay Brown, said he was just trying to get to the scene as fast as he could and try to save a life.

Once on site, they found the patient unresponsive, not breathing and they immediately began CPR until medics arrived.

The Maxwell Fire Department station chief that day, Charvis Perine, said the team performed as they trained and all did a great job. With the way the call came in there was no way to prepare, he said, but they saw what was in front of them and reacted the way they were trained.

Once the medics arrived, Maxwell fire fighters Airman first Class Travis Dyer and Senior Airman Jem Beck accompanied the individual in the ambulance where they continued administrating CPR until arriving at Jackson Hospital, Montgomery, Alabama.

As they pulled up to the hospital, the patient’s heart beat was revived.

“It was an extremely awarding experience as we backed into Jackson, when his heart [beat] came back. Twenty minutes of hard work paid off, it was very rewarding and exciting to see,” Dyer said.

“We just did what we had to do. We just gave it 100 percent. We didn’t stop, we couldn’t,” Beck said.
