Defenders with the 42nd Security Forces Squadron are sending out a patrol for trick-or-treater safety, and they’re looking for help. “We will have uniformed Security Forces and volunteers, identified by reflective gear, acting as safety officials Halloween night from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. within all housing areas on both Maxwell and Gunter, said Master Sgt. Lars Scheid, Police Services noncommissioned officer in charge. “These individuals will be on hand to assist with any vehicle traffic, misplaced parents, boo-boos, and questions.”

The purpose for the Pumpkin Patrol is to help parents and children focus on the fun of the night and ensure safety Scheid said.

The Pumpkin Patrol will be available to help keep trick-or-treating participants safe and assist with other issues, but Scheid provided tips for parents to help keep their children safe.

-              Children should always be supervised by an adult.

-              Ensure costumes are not too long to prevent tripping.

-              Wear light colors or use reflective tape for visibility or carry a flashlight or glow stick.

-              Opt for make-up instead of a mask, which can obstruct vision and become uncomfortable.

-              Do not eat anything that hasn’t not been first inspected in a well-lit area

-              Do not eat opened candies or anything not in its original wrapper.

Military volunteers must wear their service's utility uniform and civilian volunteers are asked to wear conservative clothing or child appropriate costumes.

Reflective gear will be provided, but volunteers are asked to bring their own flashlights.

“We are looking for anyone interested in helping out, this is a community event and we want to include the community in it,” said Scheid.
