SkillBridge offers work experience for transitioning service members Published Nov. 27, 2024 By Josh White Photo Details / Download Hi-Res EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The Department of Defense offers a program for service members to gain valuable work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships the last 180 days of their service. SkillBridge provides service members an opportunity to work and learn in civilian careers while still receiving their military compensation and benefits. One Airman taking advantage of this program is Aaliyah Dean, a Senior Airman from the 9th Security Forces Squadron at Beale AFB, California, who partnered with Janet Hughes, 96th Force Support Squadron Child and Youth Services Flight chief, to work at a child development center here. Hughes and Dean partnered together to demonstrate the program's potential. Dean, who is interested in teaching, highlighted the value of hands-on experience saying, “SkillBridge gave me clarity and confidence. I chose a field I was passionate about, gained relevant skills, and eased into the civilian workforce. It’s a game-changer.” Hughes emphasized the importance of aligning SkillBridge opportunities with participants’ interests and career aspirations. She also noted the program’s role in addressing local workforce needs, benefiting both Airmen and the broader community. "SkillBridge offers Airmen an incredible opportunity to bridge the gap between military and civilian life," she said. "It’s about finding a career path that aligns with their goals and equips them for success after service." People interested in the program must ensure they meet the eligibility requirements, which include having a date of separation or retirement and having completed a Transition Assistance Program course. They must also attend a mandatory, in-person SkillBridge briefing at the education office before gaining access to the application portal.
