Columbus Honors Military Families Published Dec. 10, 2024 By Airman Hayley Brown 14th Flying Training Wing COLUMBUS AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Nestled in the corner of a bustling street, away from the bright lights and movement, stood a serene venue. As you stepped inside, the soothing sound of jazz filled the air, accompanied by the gentle scent of florals and vanilla. Your gaze would wander across the mellow assembly of people, where kind eyes and warm embraces greeted you, welcoming you to the Winter Gala for the Honored Warriors Memorial Foundation. On November 22, 2024, The Honored Warriors Memorial Foundation hosted its annual Winter Gala to celebrate military families and the sacrifices made by military spouses; highlighting the resiliency and fortitude of the United States Armed Forces. “The Winter Social represents gratitude, unity, and reflection,” said Dr. Judie Holmes founder of HWMF. “It’s a time for us as a community to pause and acknowledge the incredible resilience of those who wear the uniform and those who support them.” HWMF is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing mental, physical, and emotional needs of veterans during their transition to civilian life. Dr. Judie Holmes established the foundation in 2011 in memory of her son Richard Earl Holmes II, to offer veterans access to resources, and counseling to help provide a clear path to recovery. “We also hope to highlight the critical role military spouses play, whether they’re managing the home front or providing emotional strength,” said Rita Felton, retired United States Air Force, Chief Master Sgt. “This year, we’re excited to extend recognition to spouses, to ensure we capture the full spectrum of support within military families.” “I was invited to speak on behalf of my spouse while he receives radiation for his 2nd year battling cancer,” said Senior Airman Blocher, “It was an honor to be back again this year and describe the importance of the support our spouses give us.” The event symbolizes the deep connection between service members, their families, and the communities they serve. The event focuses on the celebration of their service with the goal of bringing attention to the strength it takes to endure challenges, whether that’s navigating deployments, frequent relocations, or the sacrifices of everyday military life. The HWMF mission is to get the community to see the human stories behind military service—the personal journeys, the challenges, and the triumphs.
