WASP at Maxwell Field
Jacqueline Cochran, co-founder of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASP, inspects WASP assigned to Maxwell Field with Maxwell’s base commander during World War II. WASP was formed when the Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, formed by well-known American female aviator Nancy Harkness Love, merged with Cochran’s Women’s Flying Training Detachment Aug. 5, 1943.
