A man in his element
Air Force Col. Thatcher Cardon, commander of the 47th Medical Group at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, won the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Space Poop Challenge, beating more than 5,000 entries and winning $15,000. Cardon’s invention, the “perineal access port,” allows astronauts to manage human waste in a space suit for up to six continuous days. Air Force photo by Airman 1st Class Benjamin N. Valmoja
