People’s Daily depiction of Xi’s visit to a Wuhan market. On 10 March 2020, CCP General Secretary and PRC President Xi Jinping visited Wuhan, COVID-19’s outbreak origin. The visit was designed to be a media showcase demonstrating Xi’s leadership and control over all aspects of the crisis, from medical research to hospital operations to food supply. Note the early use of the now-standard CCP propaganda line about how the PRC response bought the world time to prepare for the pandemic.
